Rebuilding lost teeth with dental implants is a complex process in some cases. You might have to undergo multiple surgeries before your new smile is complete. For example, your care team might determine that a bone graft is required. Why might you need a bone graft prior to getting a dental implant? This blog post explains what you should know.
The Importance of Bone Grafting
Dental implants are able to act as prosthetic tooth roots because they form a strong bond with the nearby bone tissue. If the jaw is too small or weak, dental implants simply do not have the support they need to stay secure in the mouth. They could easily fail.
During a bone graft, a dentist or specialist carefully places bone material onto weak or undersized parts of your jaw. As your body integrates the grafted material, your jaw may become stronger and slightly larger, thus reaching the point where it can be a strong base for your new teeth.
Does Everyone Need a Bone Graft?
Fortunately, not all patients require a bone graft before they can get dental implants. Your care team will use imaging equipment to learn about the state of your jawbone before they plan the details of your tooth replacement procedure.
You might not need a bone graft if:
- You have lost your teeth fairly recently.
- You have never had advanced gum disease.
- You have never suffered a serious facial injury or other conditions that could negatively affect the health or structure of your jawbone.
On the other hand, the chances that you will require a bone graft are greater if:
- More than a few months have passed since you lost your natural teeth. (The jawbone naturally shrinks after tooth removal.)
- You suffered from advanced gum disease.
- Due to genetics, you have a naturally thin or weak jawbone.
- Other circumstances have negatively affected your jawbone’s ability to support dental implants.
Bone Grafting and Your Treatment Timeline
If you need a bone graft, your care team will fill you in about how it will affect your overall treatment plan. In some cases, it is possible to perform a graft at the same time as dental implant placement. In other instances, the graft must be completed a few months prior to the implant surgery.
Bone grafting can set your dental implants up for success! Ask your dentist if you have questions about this procedure and what to expect from it.
